Benvenuti cari lettori in questo quinto appuntamento di Incontri Emergenti, una rubrica a cadenza settimanale in cui presenteremo nuovi autori e nuovi romanzi che per la prima volta si affacciano nel panorama letterario: siano essi autopubblicati o pubblicati da una casa editrice, più o meno famosa.
Vi ricordo che siamo sempre alla ricerca di novità nella speranza di trovare piccole perle nascoste agli occhi dei più ma meritevoli di attenzione e visibilità.
Questa settimana vi presenteremo un autore emergente, Ryan Suvaal, che ha scritto un libro corto (solo in lingua inglese al momento) intitolato "Fireside Chat With a Grammar Nazi Serial Killer".

TRAMA TRADOTTA:

Diciassette raccapriccianti omicidi vengono riscontrati su tutto il territorio degli Stati Uniti in un arco temporale di sei mesi. Ohio, Minnesota, Arkansas e molti altri Stati sono i protagonisti. C'è un solo collegamento fra le vittime, sono scrittori. Mentre i media sensionalizzano gli omicidi e le forze dell'ordine cercano in tutti i modi di recuperare terreno, l'assassina rimane nell'ombra. Le cose diventano interessanti quando un giorno decide di apparire in un talk show online per un'intervista sincera. Le sue ragioni per voler partecipare al talk show non sono di certo la fama, ma qualcosa di molto più inquietante.

PLOT:

Seventeen gruesome murders were reported across the United States, within a span of six months. Ohio, Minnesota, Arkansas and several other states were hit. There was one clear connection among victims, they were all book authors. While media was decorating the murders with sensationalist stories, and law enforcement was playing catch-up, the homicidal maniac remained elusive and secretive. Things got very interesting, however, when one day she decided to appear on an internet talk show for an honest fireside chat. Her reason for being on this show was not a quest for fame, but something much more disturbing.

La lettura di questo piccolo libro mi ha lasciata decisamente perplessa. Scritto in modo preciso e corretto, ammetto di essere rimasta stupita dalla storia. La protagonista, serial killer di scrittori, non sopporta né tollera gli errori grammaticali che questi ultimi non correggono prima di venir pubblicati. Stupita e forse un po' disturbata da questa donna, l'autore è stato in grado di descrivere talmente bene la sua psicologia che è riuscito quasi a farmela odiare. Uccidere per degli errori grammaticali che solitamente non verrebbero nemmeno considerati? Un po' esagerato. Ma di certo il concetto dietro la storia è stato ben scritto e sviluppato in modo quasi divertente grazie ai dialoghi che raccontano la storia e le motivazioni della serial killer. Il colpo di scena finale poi è del tutto inaspettato. Ben fatto!
Ovviamente c'è sempre da augurarsi che rimanga nella finzione e che a nessuno venga la compulsione, così come spiegata dalla protagonista, di uccidere a causa di errori di scrittura!
Forse 40 pagine sono poche per potersi perdere veramente nel racconto e mi auguro che Suvaal abbia intenzione di approfondirlo. Credo possa esserci buon materiale per poter essere sviluppato in un libro più articolato.

This short book has me confused. Written in an accurate and clean way, the story surprised me page after page. The main character, a famale serial killer, hates those published authors whose books are full of uncorrected errors. Astonished and maybe a little disturbed by this woman, I was able to recognize the author's ability to describe her psichology to such an extent that at some point I almost felt like hating her. Killing someone for usually not considered errors seems a bit over the top but surely, the concept behind the narration is well written and developed. The dialogues between her and the only other speaking character, tell the story and the reasons of the serial killer and they almost create a funny atmosphere with a final plot twist. Good job, Ryan!
Clearly let's hope the fiction remains as such and that no one will ever have the compulsion, as explained by the protagonist, to kill over grammar errors!
Maybe forty pages aren't enough to get lost inside the narration and for this exact reason I hope Suvaal has every intention to elaborate it. In fact, I believe there's very good material to become a remarkable, funny, twisted and maybe a little disturbing full book.

Please, Mrs. Grammar Nazi Serial Killer... be kind! I'm no english writer!
